I am Fraser Drummond, an independent fire risk assessor based in Calne, Wiltshire.
After 24 years with Wiltshire Fire Brigade, 17 years of which spent enforcing the fire safety legislation, I now use my knowledge and experience to support smaller business owners, who may unintentionally breach legislation due to a possible lack of awareness coupled with the potential high cost of sourcing external fire risk assessment services.
My goal is simple: to make fire safety clear, manageable and affordable for the people who need it most.
I take the time to understand your business and your concerns, and I will guide you through the process with honesty with practical advice, tailored to your specific premises.
So, take a wee break, have a browse through my site and see for yourself, the services I can provide.
I was born at a very early age and reared in a small mining village near Edinburgh. Although proud of my Scottish heritage and an immense love for Scotland, at 18 years old I defected to England, joining the British Army, serving for 12 years in the Royal Corps of Transport. I spent most of my service in Germany, including the first Gulf War as a “Desert Rat” eventually hanging up my “Boots Combat High”, leaving as a Sergeant.
In 2000, I settled in Calne, Wiltshire and was fortunate enough to join Wiltshire Fire Brigade, and on being issued with my second pair of “career boots” (albeit rubber), I served Swindon and Wiltshire as a Firefighter for 24 years. 17 of those years, I spent as a Technical Fire Safety Officer, specialising in Fire Safety and Fire Safety Enforcement until my eventual retirement.
I now work part-time, gainfully employed by my wife Odette who is a local Independent Funeral Director in Calne, and having since formed Drummond Fire Risk, I can continue to extend my fire safety services to the local business community.
My motorcycle. I enjoy touring around Europe, in particular the Alps where I try to visit at least once a year. I’ve also toured India on two wheels and hopefully later this year, Vietnam.
I’m a member of the annual Calne Bike Meet Committee and in 2025, I fully restored the large internationally renowned “Scaffold Bike Structure”, just outside of Calne.

My primary competency is based on the knowledge and skills attained during the 17 years spent as a Local Authority Fire Safety Inspector with Wiltshire Fire and now, as an independent fire risk assessor, I can still offer my services as a “competent person” who will be able to help you discuss your individual needs and concerns.
I have the knowledge and the tools needed to help ensure your business and employees are safe, gather data to write a detailed action plan with the steps needed to move forward following a fire risk assessment, to see how your building complies and ultimately comply with the legal requirements of the Fire Safety Order.
In January 2025, the British Standards Institution (BSI) published BS 8674:2025, a new fire safety standard that defines a clear competency framework for fire risk assessors in the UK.
For the first time, fire risk assessors have a nationally recognised benchmark to measure competence, giving businesses confidence that assessments are carried out to a consistent and professional standard.
Whilst this new Code of Practice has just kicked in, I attained the Level 4 Diploma back in 2015.
BS 8674:2025 was developed in response to the 2017 Grenfell Tower tragedy, which exposed the devastating consequences of inconsistent and inadequate fire risk assessments.
Following the national inquiry, the final report (published in September 2024) recommended the creation of a formal competency framework. BS 8674:2025 is the result, offering performance-based criteria and three clear competency levels:
